The gynecological ultrasound is a test that is used to examine the female genital organs. Including the uterus, ovaries, and cervix.
This examination, performed using ultrasound, is a medical service that is offered in the gynecology visits in Barcelona from Dra. Gómez Roig Institute. This type of test is performed in cases of desire for family planning, contraception, menstrual disorders, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and precancerous diseases, among others.
The ultrasound examination can be performed abdominally or transvaginally. An abdominal gynecologic ultrasound is performed with a full bladder. And, contrarily, the transvaginal is performed with an empty bladder.
This test is generally painless. Despite this, the ultrasound that is performed vaginally can be a little more annoying.
The transducer (scanning probe) used in ultrasound scans sends sound waves that reflect off the structures being studied. At the same time, a computer receives the waves and uses them to create an image. At all times, the doctor can view the image on a TV monitor.
The practice of gynecological ultrasound does not involve risks. No test-related harmful effects.
What is a Gynecological Ultrasound?
Gynecological ultrasound is a test performed by the gynecologist and that complements the specialist's examination.
This is a complementary test that is usually performed in the same consultation where the gynecologist visits.
This type of specialist is trained to perform the ultrasound of his specialty.
In the face of problems or doubts that arise during the visit, the available information can be increased by performing the ultrasound. Through it, it is possible to know in greater detail what the uterus and ovaries are like and whether or not there are diseases or pathological images.
When is this Gynecological Test Performed?
Habitually a gynecological ultrasound is performed when a woman goes to her gynecologist for some discomfort or problem related to the female genital apparatus (uterus and adnexa: tubes and ovaries).
An ultrasound can also be done at preventive visits. As well as the gynecological check-ups.
If we want to rule out the presence of anomalies, we could affirm that this test is indicated in the following situations:
- Study of the menstrual cycle (when the characteristics of the period vary).
- Assessment of follicular development (ovarian response to hormones) in natural cycles or in cycles stimulated during assisted reproduction treatments, artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization: IVF. The follicle is one of the cysts that are generated in a healthy ovary to later rupture at ovulation and release its fertile fluid for fertilization.
- Know the location of intrauterine devices IUDs after its placement. It is also checked later in the reviews.
- Study of abnormal uterine bleeding . With the test you can look for the causes and reasons.
- Evaluation of a mass or pelvic mass. For example: uterine myomas , ovarian cysts, etc.
- Study of possible sequelae after an infection or pelvic inflammation. For example: abscesses or accumulation of pus in the tubes, etc.
- Analysis of the possible congenital uterine abnormalities that appear from birth.
- Detection or diagnosis of masses or malignant tumors.
Whenever an affectation or anomaly is suspected, it is better to carry out the test. It is not harmful, and can provide important information.
On occasions, it can be complemented with a nuclear magnetic resonance (MRI) or abdominal-pelvic CT.
Despite this, it is common for the resolution of the ultrasound, in the hands of experts, to provide very valuable information.
What does the Gynecologist study with Ultrasounds?
The gynecologist can study with ultrasounds mainly different characteristics of the uterus and ovaries.
The structures studied in a typical gynecological ultrasound examination include:
- Uterine size, shape, and orientation.
- Assessment endometrium, myometrium and cervix.
- Identification and knowing the shape of the ovaries.
- Study of the uterus, tubes, and ovaries to rule out masses, cysts, and fluid accumulation in the hydrosalpinx tubes among other characteristics.
Normal Fallopian tube usually cannot be seen during gynecological ultrasoundif they are healthy and do not present pathology.
How is this Gynecological Test Performed?
This gynecological test is done through a transducer and the application of a conductive gel. The test can be performed abdominally or transvaginally.
In cases where the test is performed via the abdomen, it is better that the urine bladder is full to better see the pelvic structures. This route may be especially important for those women who cannot tolerate the placement of a probe or transducer through the vaginal route.
If the gynecological ultrasound is performed transvaginally, the patient should be informed that it is better to perform it with an empty bladder. The lady must go to the bathroom before entering the gynecology office to perform the examination.
To perform the ultrasound you do not need to be fasting or make any special preparation.
With the movement of the probe, it is generally possible to study the images that show the characteristics of the intra-abdominal genitalia.
Is it safe to have a gynecological ultrasound?
Gynecological ultrasound, like the rest of ultrasounds, does not present a risk of producing negative effects on women's health.
The number of tests carried out does not negatively influence proportionally the possible consequences derived from the test.
Despite this, we always recommend that examinations be carried out under medical indication and for a justified reason. The tests must be carried out by specialist doctors.
The gynecological ultrasound is an examination that is carried out during women's gynecology visits. And helps in the study of possible diseases of the female genital tract.
On Institute of Gynecology Barcelona Dr. Gómez Roig works with specialist doctors who are experts in this type of ultrasound, as well as in the human and professional accompaniment of women.
