Natural Childbirth Normal Childbirth is one of the options that mothers have when it comes to having a child. Giving birth is one of the most exciting and unique moments of pregnancy.
This moment is special and very important for the mother, her family, as well as the professionals of the medical team at the Institute of Gynecology and obstetrics Dra. Gómez Roig located in Barcelona.
Preparing the moment of birth must be a priority in pregnancy control.
If you are pregnant, during pregnancy control and within our medical services, our midwife will explain the "birth plan" so that you and your partner are well informed. In the Natural Attention to Normal Childbirth you will be able to express your preferences at a moment as important as the birth of your child.
One of the goals of the medical team at the Dra. Gómez Roig Institute is to ensure that the baby and the mother are well, and to ensure that the experience of giving birth is lived in a positive way and can be remembered with affection and happiness.
What is natural childbirth?
Natural birth is the normal one, in which the natural evolution of its evolution is respected, in all its phases and at the birth of the baby.
The concept of natural childbirth does not conform to reality. Since all normal births are natural.
Giving birth is always natural. And the one that occurs at term (between 37-42 weeks) and that begins spontaneously is also respected. No need to provoke it.
As we have specified, the natural birth or normal respects the times and phases of work without unnecessary medical intervention. Simulating what a birth could be like outside a hospital center or a specialized clinic.
Being in a clinic or hospital center does not imply that you cannot have a natural birth.
On the other hand, the fact that a woman wants a natural birth and requires pain reduction techniques such as epidural anesthesia to improve her experience does not mean that this decision interferes with the natural process.
In case of risk to the mother or child, specialized doctors will be prepared to avoid negative consequences quickly and effectively.
Why does childbirth occur?
Childbirth occurs as the completion of the pregnancy ’s relationship with the Baby's birth. It is also triggered by hormonal changes that appear at the end of pregnancy. Along with the maturation of tissues over time (cervix and uterine musculature).
A woman is considered to be in labor with the appearance of regular uterine contractions. These also increase in intensity and frequency, accompanied by changes in the cervix.
The birthing process must be as natural as possible, leaving its evolution spontaneous, and minimizing the intervention of professionals when it is really indicated.
Labor always evolves in three phases:
- The effacement and dilation of the cervix.
- Descent and birth of the baby.
- Delivery of the placenta (delivery of the placenta).
Thus, giving birth is a normal and natural process.
What are the types of childbirth?
When we talk about which are the types of childbirth these can be classified into:
- Spontaneous or natural vaginal.
- Instrumented vagina.
- Caesarean section.
Vaginal Delivery
In most cases, the vaginal delivery is spontaneous. It is important to know that whenever possible we will recommend this type of way of giving birth.
Instrumented Vaginal Delivery
Within the Instrumental Vaginal Deliveryalthough a natural birth is always attempted, sometimes, for the benefit of the mother or the baby, instrumentation (forceps or suction cup) must be used.
If the indication for the use of the instruments is correct and it is performed according to the guidelines and protocols, the instrumentation can avoid unnecessary cesarean sections.
Instrumented labor requires epidural anesthesia for pain management.
Despite this, its use is reserved for the medical indication of the specialist.
Cesarean section
In the case of delivery by Caesarean section, we must explain that it is a surgical intervention that allows the extraction of the baby through the abdominal route. This type of assistance is carried out under regional, intradural or epidural anesthesia. Pain management is important in childbirth care.
There are well-defined indications for performing a cesarean section.
In cases of failure of the vaginal route, it is an option that ensures the safe and healthy birth of the baby.
There are different types of caesarean sections:
- Elective caesarean section: is the cesarean section that is performed in pregnant women with maternal or fetal pathology that contraindicates or advises against giving birth vaginally. It is a scheduled intervention.
- Cesarean section in the course of labor or appeal: it is the cesarean section that is indicated and performed during the course of labor due to different problems or due to its non-correct evolution.
- Urgent caesarean section: it is the cesarean section that is performed when coinciding with a serious acute pathology of the mother or the fetus, with risk for any of them. Which makes it advisable to end the pregnancy quickly.
The types of deliveries can also start spontaneously or be induced if a medical indication appears or the pregnancy is prolonged over time.
The natural deliveryand less invasive is the one of choice. But this can be influenced by the need to ensure the well-being of the mother and her baby.
A healthy mom and baby is always the most important thing.

How to prepare for a natural birth
Prepare for a natural birth normal birth is an important issue that should be worked on during pregnancy. That is why our midwife will inform you of the preparation of the perineum during pregnancy.
The perineum is the area of skin and muscle between the vagina and the anus. During birth it stretches out to allow the baby's head to come out through it. Despite this, perineal massage is one of the methods that can help reduce injuries to the perineum.
Preparation of the Perineum during Pregnancy.
Perineal massage can be done by yourself, or by your partner. Most women start doing it around 34 weeks into their pregnancy, and 1 to 2 times a day.
This massage can be done semi-sitting, leaning against several pillows, or standing with one leg up on a chair. Usually, a mirror can help to see how it is done.
To make the perineal preparation a lubricant is usually used (almond oil or rosehip oil). It is important that the hands of the person who performs it are clean and with short nails.
It is recommended to do the massage by rubbing the lubricant on the perineal skin for 3 or 4 minutes.
We place the thumbs superficially in the vagina and the perineum is pressed towards the rectum, as well as to both sides.
We gently stretch the opening by pressing down until one feels a slight stretching sensation. Pressure should be maintained for one minute. Then rest for another minute or two.
The massage is usually repeated two or three times. It is important to respect and not touch the urethral area (where urine comes out) to reduce the risk of a urine infection.
On the other hand, you have to know that perineal massage should be avoided if you have a vaginal or vulvar infection.
The postpartum
Postpartum is a crucial phase of adaptation, both physical and emotional.
During this period, the woman experiences many changes that, although normal, require an adaptation process that can be more or less easy. After the initial euphoria, excitement, along with the feeling of relief after the birth of the baby, coming home may not be easy.
Postpartum usually coincides with a drop in mood, to which is added fatigue, possible anemia, and difficulties with breastfeeding.
At the same time, doubts, fears and insecurities characteristic of the beginning of the role as parents may also appear.
It is very important to trust your own instinct as a mother, as well as to share with your partner the different feelings, sometimes ambivalent, that are experienced these days.
When in doubt, you should consult with the reference professional for an adequate assessment.
On Institute of Gynecology and Obstetrics Dra. Gómez Roig located in Barcelona, Ana, our specialist midwife in natural care for normal childbirth, will accompany you not only during pregnancy, but also after giving birth, in the puerperium.
